Current Investments are treated as cash equivalents, so opening C&CE = ₹1,33,000 and closing C&CE = ₹2,95,000.
Concept
Under the indirect method the operating section starts from Net Profit before Tax, adds back non-cash and non-operating items (depreciation, interest on debentures), adjusts for working-capital changes, and deducts tax paid. Financing covers share capital, debentures, bank overdraft and interest paid; investing covers purchase/sale of fixed and intangible assets. Current Investments here are treated as part of cash and cash equivalents (so their movement is not shown as a cash flow but appears in the opening/closing cash balances).
Working Notes
WN1 - Net Profit before Tax
| Particulars | ₹ |
|---|---|
| Increase in Surplus (3,20,000 - 60,000) | 2,60,000 |
| Add: Transfer to General Reserve (1,40,000 - 60,000) | 80,000 |
| Add: Provision for Tax made during the year | 1,18,000 |
| Net Profit before Tax | 4,58,000 |
WN2 - Tax Paid. Opening provision ₹46,000 + provision made ₹1,18,000 - closing provision ₹1,18,000 = ₹46,000 (provision made is taken as the closing balance).
WN3 - Depreciation = accumulated depreciation 1,20,000 - 1,15,000 = ₹5,000 (no fixed asset was sold).
WN4 - Interest on 12% Debentures. Old ₹3,00,000 for the full year = 36,000; new ₹2,00,000 issued on 1-9-2017 for 7 months = 2,00,000 x 12% x 7/12 = 14,000. Total = ₹50,000.
WN5 - Purchase of Plant & Machinery = gross block 11,00,000 - 7,50,000 = ₹3,50,000. Purchase of Goodwill = 2,68,000 - 1,70,000 = ₹98,000.
