Part (a): Management is a science (inexact/social science) because it has a systematised body of knowledge, principles based on observation and experimentation, and universally applicable principles, though it deals with unpredictable human behaviour.

Part (b): The three dimensions of management are management of work, management of people, and management of operations.

Part (a)

Science is a systematised body of knowledge that explains general truths or the operation of general laws. Testing management against the features of science shows that it qualifies as a science, though an inexact one.

  • Systematised body of knowledge: Like any science, management has its own body of theory made up of principles, concepts and techniques (for example, division of work, unity of command, planning, organising and controlling). This knowledge is organised, teachable and learnable.
  • Principles based on experimentation and observation: Scientific principles are formed through observation and repeated experiment. Management principles too are the result of observation and testing in many organisations. However, because these 'experiments' take place in real organisations where all variables cannot be controlled, the results are not as exact as in physical science.
  • Universal validity: Scientific laws apply universally. Management principles also have general applicability across different kinds of organisations, but they are not as rigid; they must be adapted and modified to suit the particular situation. …
