Part (a): Premature evaluation, lack of attention and distrust are psychological barriers that distort communication.

Part (a)

Psychological or emotional barriers arise from the mental and emotional state of the sender and receiver, and they strongly affect how a message is encoded, sent, received and interpreted. Three important ones are:

  1. Premature evaluation: This occurs when the receiver evaluates the message and forms an opinion before the sender has finished. Instead of listening with an open mind, the receiver jumps to conclusions, often due to bias or preconceived notions. Valuable parts of the message are then missed and its real meaning is lost.

  2. Lack of attention: Effective communication needs active, focused listening. When the receiver is pre-occupied with other worries or tasks, or is simply not interested, the message fails to register fully. Instructions may be half-heard and important details overlooked, leading to incomplete understanding and errors.

  3. Distrust: Communication depends on mutual trust. If the receiver distrusts the sender, even a genuine message is viewed with suspicion and skepticism, and its meaning is distorted or dismissed. Distrust acts like a filter that colours everything the sender says. …
