At Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire, Douglas swam two miles across the lake to Stamp Act Island, using every stroke he had learned. Only once did the old terror return: in the middle of the lake he put his face under the water and saw nothing but bottomless water, and the old sensation came back "in miniature." Instead of freezing, he laughed and challenged it -- "Well, Mr Terror, what do you think you can do to me?" -- and it fled, and he swam on. He had learned to meet the fear head-on rather than be ruled by it.
Still carrying residual doubts, he made his final test at Warm Lake in the Cascades. The next morning he stripped, dived into the lake, and swam across to the other shore and back -- just as Doug Corpron used to do. This time no terror came.
