According to the poet, the Earth teaches us that stillness is not death: 'as when everything seems dead / and later proves to be alive', life quietly renews itself beneath an apparent lifelessness.

At the close of 'Keeping Quiet', Neruda answers a worry the poem itself has raised. He has insisted that his call for silence 'should not be confused / with total inactivity' and that 'Life is what it is about; / I want no truck with death.' To prove that stillness need not mean death, he turns to Nature as a teacher.

The poet writes, 'Perhaps the Earth can teach us / as when everything seems dead / and later proves to be alive.' Here the Earth is personified as a wise teacher, and the lesson comes not through words but through Nature's own example.
