When Gandhi was summoned to court, thousands of Champaran peasants gathered spontaneously outside — a show of solidarity that unnerved the officials, led to the case against Gandhi being dropped, and marked the moment the sharecroppers began to lose their fear of British authority.

This question is set in Indigo, Louis Fischer's account of Gandhi's 1917 campaign in Champaran, Bihar — not any earlier revolt. Gandhi had come to investigate the plight of peasants forced under the tinkathia arrangement to grow indigo on a fixed part of their land for the British planters.

Soon after Gandhi arrived and began his enquiry, the authorities ordered him to leave the district. He refused and was summoned to appear in court. News of this spread quickly, and on the day of the hearing thousands of peasants gathered spontaneously around the courthouse to support him.

The result of this demonstration was significant on several levels:

  1. The officials lost control of the situation. The colonial administration was used to commanding obedience, but here it faced a huge, orderly crowd it could neither disperse nor ignore. The magistrate was unsure how to proceed and postponed judgement.

  2. Gandhi effectively became the peasants' recognised leader. By standing with him in such numbers, the peasants signalled that they trusted him to speak for them, and the government found it could not settle the indigo question without involving him. …
