The mystery was the identity and purpose of an English visitor to Gemini Studios; years later Asokamitran solved it when he discovered that the magazine The Encounter was edited by Stephen Spender — the same man who had puzzled everyone at the studio.

In Poets and Pancakes, an Englishman once arrived at Gemini Studios and delivered a talk to an audience of Tamil film-makers, poets and technicians. Because he spoke as an English poet addressing people who had little to do with English poetry, and because his accent and purpose were hard to follow, no one could understand who he really was or why he had come. The visit was left unexplained and became a standing puzzle for the Gemini family.

Asokamitran solved it only years afterwards, and quite by chance. He wanted to enter a short-story competition run by a British periodical, and to learn about the magazine he looked it up — it was called The Encounter. When he checked its details, he found that its editor was Stephen Spender. The name connected everything: Spender was a well-known English poet, and Asokamitran realised he was the same mysterious visitor who had once addressed the bewildered gathering at Gemini Studios. …
