These families have made bangles for generations, working in dark, airless cells beside searing furnaces — labour that ruins their health and often costs them their eyesight even before adulthood. Despite this gruelling work, their wages are pitifully low, barely enough to survive.

This poverty leads inevitably to indebtedness. To meet basic needs or to buy raw materials, families borrow from moneylenders, and exploitative terms keep them permanently in debt. The burden is not only financial but psychological, narrowing every choice and aspiration.

The lack of money and the weight of debt then trap the children. Instead of going to school, they are drawn into the same dangerous work from a very young age, so they learn only the family trade and grow up without the means to pursue any other livelihood. Their fate is sealed to repeat their parents' lives.

Beyond this, the bangle-makers face organised exploitation from a whole nexus of powerful figures — the story names "the sahukars, the middlemen, the policemen, the keepers of law, the bureaucrats and the politicians" — who together keep them from forming cooperatives or demanding fair wages.
