Taking Gandhi for an ordinary peasant, the servants treated him as a likely untouchable — allowing him to stay but refusing to let him draw water from the well for fear of 'polluting' it.

Gandhi travelled to Patna to seek Rajendra Prasad's help, but the lawyer was away from home. His servants knew Rajkumar Shukla as a poor farmer who kept pestering their master about the indigo sharecroppers, and when Gandhi arrived in his simple clothes and in Shukla's company, they assumed he too was just another peasant.

Because of this, they showed him none of the courtesy due to a distinguished guest. They let the two men stay on the grounds, but they kept their distance. Most tellingly, they would not allow Gandhi to draw water from the well: a drop from his bucket, they feared, might fall in and pollute the whole source, for they had no way of knowing whether this shabby stranger was an untouchable. …
