Theme (NCERT “About the Unit”)

The central theme of the unit is the pain that is inflicted on the people of a territory by its conquerors when they take away the right to study or speak their own language. In The Last Lesson, this is exactly what the order from Berlin does to the people of Alsace: an entire community is stripped, overnight, of the freedom to learn in French. The grief this causes — in M. Hamel, in the silent village elders, in Franz — is the emotional core of the story, and it shows how the loss of a language is felt as the loss of a part of oneself.

Sub-theme (NCERT “About the Unit”)

Running alongside it is a quieter sub-theme: the attitudes of students and teachers towards learning and teaching. Franz begins as a careless, reluctant learner who would rather chase birds' eggs than study; M. Hamel, for all his devotion, admits he too sometimes neglected his duty. The story invites us to reflect honestly on how we value — or fail to value — education while we still have it. …
