Writing Skills & Grammar: Section B Overview
Section B of the CBSE Class 12 English Core paper is called Creative Writing Skills and carries 18 marks out of the 80-mark theory paper. It is the part of the exam that checks whether you can produce clear, correctly formatted, purpose-driven English of your own - not just understand a passage or a poem.
What Section B tests
- Format sense - Every writing task (notice, invitation, letter, article, report) has a fixed layout. The examiner first scans whether your answer looks right: heading, date, salutation, subject line, signature block, word limit. Format marks are the easiest to score and the easiest to lose.
- Content / relevance - Whether you cover the points the prompt asks for, stay on topic, and include realistic, specific detail instead of vague padding.
- Expression - Grammatical accuracy, correct tense and voice, appropriate register (formal vs. informal), spelling, punctuation and smooth flow.
Typical question shapes (latest sample paper)
| Task | Word limit | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Notice Writing | ~50 | 4 |
| Formal / Informal Invitation & Reply | ~50 | 4 |
| Letter (Editor / Job Application / Business) | 120-150 | 5 |
| Article / Report Writing | 120-150 | 5 |
Questions usually come with an internal choice ("attempt any one"), so you can pick the task you are strongest at.
How to use this chapter
Each following section teaches one format the concept-first way: what it is, when it appears, the exact layout the examiner expects, the marking breakdown, a fully worked model answer, and the mistakes that silently cost marks. A dedicated grammar section reinforces the accuracy that the Expression marks reward across every task. Master the format skeleton first - once the layout is automatic, you can spend the exam writing good content instead of remembering where the date goes.
These skills also map directly to the kind of questions students search for as CBSE Class 12 English writing skills questions and answers and NCERT English Core Section B practice - the formats below are the ones examined every year.
