Question

Q.Generally it is observed that human males suffer from hemophilia more than human females, who rarely suffer from it. Explain giving reasons.

(OR)

Part (a): haemophilia is X-linked recessive - a male (single X) is affected by one Xh allele while a female needs two (XhXh), which is far rarer, so males suffer more.

Part (b): the violet pea shows complete dominance (F2 = 3 violet : 1 white; heterozygote violet), whereas the red snapdragon shows incomplete dominance (F2 = 1 red : 2 pink : 1 white; heterozygote pink); both have a 1 : 2 : 1 genotype ratio.

Part (a)

The pattern is explained by the fact that the haemophilia gene is carried on the X chromosome and its allele is recessive. Write the normal allele as XH and the disease allele as Xh.

  1. Males are hemizygous. A male has only one X (genotype XY), inherited from his mother. His genotype is either XHY (normal) or XhY (haemophilic). There is no second X to carry a dominant normal allele, so a single Xh allele expresses the disease. A boy who inherits Xh from a carrier mother is haemophilic.

  2. Females need two copies. A female has two X chromosomes (XX). Her possibilities are XHXH (normal), XHXh (carrier, phenotypically normal because the dominant normal allele masks the recessive one), and XhXh (haemophilic). She is affected only if she is homozygous recessive, which requires the Xh allele from both parents — so her father must himself be haemophilic (XhY) and her mother at least a carrier. This combination is rare, partly because affected males historically had reduced survival/fitness.

Example cross (carrier mother XHXh x normal father XHY):

XH (father)Y (father)
XH (mother)XHXH normal daughterXHY normal son
Xh (mother)XHXh carrier daughterXhY haemophilic son
