  1. NaAlF4NaAlF_4/cryolite lowers the melting point and raises conductivity of molten alumina; CO forms volatile Ni(CO)X4\ce{Ni(CO)4} (Mond process) to purify nickel.
  2. Bauxite is leached with hot NaOH to Na[Al(OH)X4]\ce{Na[Al(OH)4]}, precipitated by COX2\ce{CO2} as Al(OH)X3\ce{Al(OH)3}, then calcined to AlX2OX3\ce{Al2O3}.

Part (a)

(i) Role of NaAlF4NaAlF_4 in aluminium extraction.

Pure alumina (AlX2OX3\ce{Al2O3}) melts near 2050 °C — too high for electrolysis. Adding NaAlF4NaAlF_4 together with cryolite (NaX3AlFX6\ce{Na3AlF6}) dissolves the alumina and forms a melt that:

  1. melts at a much lower temperature (~950 °C), saving energy, and
  2. conducts electricity well (it dissociates into ions), allowing reduction at the cathode. The fused mixture is electrolysed (2 AlX2OX3+3 C→4 Al+3 COX2\ce{2Al2O3 + 3C -> 4Al + 3CO2}); the additive acts as a flux/solvent and is not consumed.

(ii) Role of CO in refining of Ni (Mond process).

Impure nickel is warmed in a stream of CO. Only nickel reacts, forming volatile nickel tetracarbonyl, which is separated from solid impurities and then decomposed at higher temperature to deposit pure nickel:

Ni+4 CO→330−350 KNi(CO)X4→450−470 KNi+4 CO\ce{Ni + 4CO ->[330-350 K] Ni(CO)4 ->[450-470 K] Ni + 4CO} …
