A peptide linkage (peptide bond) is the amide bond that joins amino acids together; it is the defining structural feature of proteins. The answer is (C).

The concept: what makes a peptide bond special

When amino acids link together to form proteins, they don't just sit side by side—they form a specific type of covalent bond called a peptide linkage or peptide bond. This bond is the backbone of protein structure.

The peptide bond forms through a condensation reaction between the carboxyl group (−COOH\ce{-COOH}) of one amino acid and the amino group (−NHX2\ce{-NH2}) of another. A molecule of water is released, and what remains is an amide linkage:

R−CO−OH+H−NH−RX′→R−CO−NH−RX′+HX2O\ce{R-CO-OH + H-NH-R' -> R-CO-NH-R' + H2O}

The resulting −CO−NHX−\ce{-CO-NH-} group is the peptide bond. It has partial double-bond character due to resonance, which restricts rotation and gives proteins their characteristic rigidity and planarity at each peptide unit.

Why the other options don't fit

Let's see why peptide bonds are exclusive to proteins:

  1. Carbohydrates (A) are built from monosaccharides joined by glycosidic linkages—bonds between a hemiacetal/hemiketal and an alcohol group. These are ether-type bonds (C−O−C\ce{C-O-C}), not amide bonds. No peptide linkage here.

  2. Vitamins (B) are a diverse group of organic compounds with wildly different structures—some are simple alcohols (vitamin A), some are complex ring systems (vitamin B₁₂), some are steroids (vitamin D). They are not polymers of amino acids and contain no systematic peptide bonds. …
