Forward-biasing E-B and reverse-biasing C-B lets most emitter holes reach the collector, giving current and voltage amplification in CE mode.

Circuit (CE configuration, PNP transistor):

  • The emitter (p-type, heavily doped) is connected through a base-bias battery (VEEV_{EE}) such that the emitter-base junction is forward biased.
  • The collector (p-type, lightly doped, larger area) is connected to the negative terminal of a larger battery VCCV_{CC} through a load resistor RCR_C, so the collector-base junction is reverse biased.
  • The base (thin, n-type, lightly doped) is the common terminal between the input (base) and output (collector) circuits — hence "common emitter".

Working:

  1. Forward bias at the emitter-base junction causes a large number of majority carriers (holes) from the emitter to be injected into the thin base region — the emitter current IEI_E.
  2. Since the base is thin and lightly doped, only a small fraction of these holes recombine with electrons in the base, giving a small base current IBI_B. …
