A transistor is a two-junction, three-region semiconductor device that uses a small base current to control a much larger emitter-collector current, with electrons as carriers in npn and holes in pnp.

What is a transistor: A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a three-terminal semiconductor device formed by sandwiching a thin, lightly-doped layer of one type of semiconductor between two heavily-doped layers of the opposite type, creating two p-n junctions back to back. The three terminals are the emitter (heavily doped, supplies charge carriers), base (very thin, lightly doped, in the middle), and collector (moderately doped, collects the carriers). It comes in two types: npn and pnp.

Action of an npn transistor: Here an n-type emitter and an n-type collector sandwich a p-type base. The majority carriers are electrons. The emitter-base junction is forward-biased and the base-collector junction is reverse-biased. Forward bias at the emitter-base junction causes electrons to be injected in large numbers from the emitter into the thin, lightly-doped base. Since the base is very thin and lightly doped, only a small fraction of these electrons recombine with holes there (constituting the small base current IBI_B); the vast majority diffuse across the base and reach the base-collector depletion region, where the reverse-biased junction's electric field sweeps them into the collector, constituting the collector current ICI_C. Thus IE=IB+ICI_E = I_B + I_C, with IC≫IBI_C \gg I_B — a small base current controls a much larger collector current.
