The base must be thin and lightly doped so that most of the charge carriers injected from the emitter diffuse across it to the collector without recombining, which is essential for the transistor to have a large current gain.

In a transistor, the emitter injects a large number of majority carriers into the base region. For the transistor to work efficiently (i.e. have a large fraction of emitter current reach the collector, giving high current gain α\alpha close to 1 and β=α/(1−α)\beta = \alpha/(1-\alpha) large), as many of these injected carriers as possible must survive the crossing of the base and reach the collector-base junction, rather than recombining with the base's own majority carriers.
