Meaning. The mode is the value that occurs most frequently in a distribution.
Merits of Mode:
- Simple and easy to understand and, in many cases, to locate by inspection.
- Not affected by extreme values, so a few very large or very small observations do not distort it.
- Can be determined for open-end classes, since it does not need the extreme class limits.
- Applicable to qualitative data (e.g. most preferred brand), where mean and median cannot be used.
- It is the value of maximum concentration, so it is often the most 'typical' or representative value.
Demerits of Mode:
- Not rigidly defined — a series may have no mode, or two or more modes (bi-modal/multi-modal), giving ambiguous results.
- Not based on all the observations; it depends only on the point of greatest concentration.
- Not capable of further algebraic treatment (e.g. a combined mode of groups cannot be computed as the mean can). …
