Imagine you walk into a library. A good library doesn't just have a lot of books — it has books on different subjects (variety), a good number of copies of each popular book (abundance), and a sensible way the books are arranged on the shelves (structure). Biodiversity works the same way.
When ecologists talk about the three components of biodiversity, they are describing three distinct ways to measure the "health" and "richness" of life in a place. The NCERT textbook breaks it down into these three pillars:
- Genetic diversity — the variety of genes within a single species.
- Species diversity — the variety of species in a region.
- Ecological diversity — the variety of ecosystems (forests, deserts, wetlands, etc.) in a landscape.
Let's take each one from the ground up.
1. Genetic Diversity (The "Raw Material" Inside Each Species)
Think of a species like the domestic dog. You have Great Danes, Chihuahuas, Labradors, and street dogs — all the same species (Canis lupus familiaris), but wildly different in size, colour, and behaviour. That difference comes from genetic variation.
Genetic diversity is the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species. It is the variation of genes within a population of a single species.
Why does this matter? A species with high genetic diversity (like the Indian wild mango) can adapt to diseases, climate change, or new pests. A species with very low genetic diversity (like the cheetah, which is nearly identical genetically) is fragile — one disease can wipe out the entire population. For a commerce student, think of it as a diversified investment portfolio: the more variety you have, the safer you are against a crash.
The NCERT emphasises that genetic diversity is the raw material for evolution. Without it, a species cannot adapt. India is rich in genetic diversity for crops like rice (over 50,000 varieties) and mango (over 1,000 varieties).
2. Species Diversity (The "Catalogue" of Life)
This is the most intuitive component. Species diversity refers to the variety of species — plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms — within a given region.
But it is not just a simple count (which is called species richness). It also includes species evenness — how evenly the individuals are distributed among the species. A forest with 100 trees of one species and 1 tree of another has low evenness. A forest with 50 trees of one species and 51 of another has high evenness.
The NCERT points out that species diversity is the most commonly used measure of biodiversity. A place like the Western Ghats has very high species diversity (many endemic frogs, birds, and plants), while a polar desert has very low species diversity.
Why does it matter? More species usually means a more stable ecosystem. If one species disappears, others can fill its role. Think of it like a company with many departments — if the marketing team quits, the company still runs because other departments exist. If the company had only one department, it would collapse.
3. Ecological Diversity (The "Landscape" of Life)
This is the broadest component. Ecological diversity refers to the variety of ecosystems, habitats, communities, and ecological processes in a given area.
It is not just about counting species; it is about the kinds of places they live in. A region with forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and deserts has high ecological diversity. A region that is only one type of forest has low ecological diversity.
For example, India has extremely high ecological diversity — from the snow-covered Himalayas to the tropical rainforests of Kerala, the Thar Desert, the mangroves of the Sundarbans, and the coral reefs of the Andamans. Each of these ecosystems supports a completely different set of species and ecological processes.
The NCERT highlights that ecological diversity is the largest scale of biodiversity. It includes the interactions between species and their physical environment — nutrient cycles, energy flow, and succession.
Why Should a Commerce/Humanities Student Care?
You will never be asked to calculate a biodiversity index. But you will be asked to understand why biodiversity matters for the economy, for culture, and for human survival. …
All the mango varieties in question belong to a single species and differ only in traits arising from variation in their genes, so the diversity being described lies within one species rather than between species or ecosystems. …
More than 1000 varieties of a single mango species is an example of genetic diversity, one of the three recognised levels of biodiversity.
Biodiversity is studied at three levels:
- Genetic diversity — variation in genes/genetic makeup within a single species.
- Species diversity — the variety of species within a region.
- Ecological diversity — diversity at the ecosystem level (deserts, rainforests, wetlands, etc.). …

Genetic diversity is the diversity in the genetic makeup (genes and their alleles) found within and among the individuals of a species.
Biodiversity is studied at three levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecological diversity. Genetic diversity refers to the variation in genes/genetic information (a single species may show high genetic variation across its geographical range, e.g. the medicinal plant Rauwolfia vomitoria shows variation in the potency of the active chemical reserpine it produces). Option (a) describes species diversity (varieties/richness of sp …
