Biodiversity refers to the total variety of life at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels — the raw material sustaining the biosphere.

What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity, a term popularised by the sociobiologist Edward Wilson, refers to the enormous variety and variability found among living organisms and the ecological complexes (ecosystems) in which they occur, on Earth as a whole or within a particular region. It encompasses variation not just in the number of species, but also within species (genetically) and among the different ecosystems that host them.

Major components of biodiversity:

  1. Genetic diversity: Variation in genes (and their alleles) present within a single species, across different populations or geographical regions — e.g. the enormous variety of rice or mango varieties found across India, all differing genetically despite belonging to the same species.
  2. Species diversity: The variety and abundance of different species found within a region — e.g. India, despite having only about 2.4% of the world's land area, is estimated to have around 8.1% of the global species diversity. …
