Biodiversity spans genetic, species and ecosystem levels of variation.

Biodiversity (biological diversity) is the sum total of diversity that exists among living organisms, at all levels of biological organisation, in a given region. Its three major components are:

  1. Genetic diversity — variation in genes within a single species across its geographical range.
  2. Species diversity — the variety/number of species present in a region.
  3. Ecological (ecosystem) diversity — variety of habitats, ecological processes and ecosystems (deserts, forests, wetlands, etc.) present in a region.
