Biodiversity is the total variety of life at all levels; its three levels are genetic, species and ecological diversity.

What is biodiversity: The term biodiversity (biological diversity), popularised by Edward Wilson, refers to the variety and variability of all living organisms present in a given region - it includes the different kinds of plants, animals and micro-organisms, the genes they contain, and the ecosystems they form. It represents the richness of life on Earth.

Three important levels of biodiversity:

Different individuals or populations of the same species differ in their genes; for example, the medicinal plant Rauwolfia vomitoria growing in different Himalayan ranges shows genetic differences in the potency of the chemical reserpine it produces.
