Significance: greater diversity → greater stability, productivity, resilience and ecosystem services; loss of species weakens the ecosystem (rivet-popper hypothesis).
Concept
Species diversity is the variety of species in a given area or community. It is measured at two levels:
- Species richness — the number of different species present per unit area.
- Species evenness (equitability) — how evenly the individuals are distributed among those species. A community with many species, present in balanced numbers, has high species diversity. (Diversity is generally highest in the tropics and decreases towards the poles.)
Significance of species diversity in an ecosystem
- Stability: communities with more species tend to be more stable — their productivity does not change much from year to year, and they resist occasional disturbances (droughts, disease).
- Productivity: more diverse communities are more productive, because different species use resources (light, nutrients, space) in complementary ways.
- Resistance and resilience: diverse ecosystems are more resistant to invasions by alien species and recover faster after perturbations.
- Ecosystem services: greater diversity ensures the smooth functioning of vital services — pollination, pollution control, climate regulation, oxygen production, and nutrient cycling.
- Rivet-popper hypothesis (Paul Ehrlich): likening species to the rivets holding an aeroplane together — losing a few may be tolerated, but losing many species (rivets) endangers the whole ecosystem (the flight); each species contributes to ecosystem health. …
