Find the mode of the following discrete series:
| x | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| f | 3 | 7 | 9 | 4 |
Concept understanding — Mode
Mode: The Most Frequent Value
Imagine you ask a class of 30 students how many siblings they have. The answers come in: some say 0, some say 1, some say 2, a few say 3, and one says 5. You write the numbers on the board. One number appears more times than any other — say, 1 appears 12 times. That number, 1, is the mode of the data.
The mode is simply the value that occurs most often. It's the most popular, the most common, the typical-in-the-sense-of-frequent. No calculation, no formula — just counting.
The word "mode" comes from the French la mode meaning "fashion" — the most fashionable, i.e., the most common, value.
The Precise Definition
For a given set of data, the mode is the observation (or value) that has the highest frequency — that is, the one that appears the maximum number of times.
If no value repeats, the data has no mode. If two values tie for the highest frequency, the data is bimodal (two modes). If more than two tie, it is multimodal.
Examples
Example 1 (Unimodal):
Data: 2, 3, 5, 3, 7, 3, 8, 3, 9
Frequency: 3 appears 4 times, all others appear once.
Mode = 3
Example 2 (Bimodal):
Data: 4, 6, 4, 7, 6, 8, 4, 6
Frequency: 4 appears 3 times, 6 appears 3 times.
Modes = 4 and 6
Example 3 (No mode):
Data: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Each value appears exactly once.
No mode.
Why Mode Matters
Unlike the mean (average) or median (middle value), the mode works for any type of data — numbers, yes, but also categories. You can find the mode of favourite colours, car brands, or blood groups. The mean of "red, blue, red, green" is meaningless; the mode — red — tells you the most common choice.
A common mistake: thinking the mode is the frequency (the count), not the value. In the siblings example, the mode is 1 (the number of siblings), not 12 (the number of students who said 1).
Mode for Grouped Data (Frequency Tables)
When data is grouped into intervals (e.g., marks 0–10, 10–20, …), the mode is the modal class — the class interval with the highest frequency. For a precise value within that class, you use a formula (the "modal formula"), but the core idea remains: the most frequent group.
Quick Summary
- Mode = most frequent value
- Can be used for numbers or categories
- Data can have one mode, more than one, or none
- No calculation — just count frequencies
The mode is the only measure of central tendency that can be used for categorical (non-numeric) data. For numeric data, it is often the least informative measure, but for categorical data, it is the only one that makes sense.
The mode of a discrete series is simply the value carrying the highest frequency.
The highest frequency is 9, occurring at x=15.
Mode = 15.
Scanning the frequency column: 3, 7, 9, 4. The highest frequency is 9, against the value x=15.
Independent cross-check: no other value's frequency comes close to tying with 9 (the next-highest is 7, at x=10) — the distribution is clearly unimodal, so the mode is unambiguous and a grouping table is not needed here.
Mode = 15 (the value with the clearly highest frequency, 9).
Confusing the mode (the VALUE with the highest frequency, 15) with the frequency itself (9) — a common slip when reading straight off a frequency table.
- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.From the following, the one which is a positional average, is :(a) Arithmetic mean(b) Geometric mean(c) Harmonic mean(d) Mode
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mode is a positional average; the three means are mathematical averages.
Averages are grouped as:
- Mathematical averages — computed from the values: arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean.
- Positional averages — fixed by position/location in the ordered data: median and mode (the value of greatest frequency).
Among the options only the mode is positional.
✓Final answerOption (d) Mode — a positional average (value with highest frequency).
- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL1 markQ.Express each of the following in one word / term : A measure of central value which has greatest frequency density.
›Reveal solutionSolution
One-word term: Mode.
The mode is the value that appears most often; in a frequency distribution it corresponds to the point/class of greatest frequency density. It is a positional average.
✓Final answerMode.
- CBSE 2023Set ANNUAL1 markQ.Express each of the following in one word / term : A series with two modal values
›Reveal solutionSolution
A series with two modal values is a bimodal series.
The mode is the value that occurs most frequently. When a series has a single mode it is unimodal; when it has two values that occur with the (equal) highest frequency it is called a bimodal series (three modes → trimodal, more → multimodal).
✓Final answerBimodal series
- CBSE 2022Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.The value that occurs most often is called :(a) Geometric mean(b) Harmonic mean(c) Median(d) Mode
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mode = the value with the highest frequency.
Among the measures of central tendency:
- Geometric mean and Harmonic mean are computed averages,
- Median is the middle value,
- Mode is the value that appears most frequently.
So the value occurring most often is the mode.
✓Final answerOption (d) — Mode.
- CBSE 2022Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.The modal value of 6, 7, 8, 9, 8, 7, 8, 9, 8 is :(a) 6(b) 7(c) 8(d) 9
›Reveal solutionSolution
Frequency of 8 is highest ⇒ mode =8.
Tally the values:
- 6: once,
- 7: twice,
- 8: four times,
- 9: twice.
The value with the greatest frequency is 8, so the modal value is 8.
✓Final answerOption (c) — 8.
