Migration is caused by push factors (poverty, unemployment, poor facilities at home) and pull factors (jobs, income, facilities elsewhere), plus social and political reasons.

Causes of migration can be grouped as follows:

A. Push factors (that force people to leave their place of origin):

  • Poverty and unemployment in the home region (especially rural areas).
  • Low wages and low agricultural income, and disguised/seasonal unemployment in villages.
  • Natural calamities like drought, floods and famine that destroy livelihoods.
  • Lack of basic facilities — education, health, transport and infrastructure in the home area.

B. Pull factors (that attract people to a new place):

  • Better employment opportunities and higher wages/income in cities and industrial areas.
  • Better education, health and other facilities available in urban/developed areas.
  • Higher standard of living and modern amenities.

C. Other (social and political) factors:

  • Marriage, family reasons and social ties.
  • Political disturbances, war or displacement in some cases. …
