Poverty is indicated by low income, low consumption/calorie intake, unemployment, poor health and nutrition, and illiteracy/poor housing.

Five indicators of poverty:

  1. Low income — The poor have very low and often irregular incomes, insufficient to meet even basic needs; a large share of the population earning below the poverty-line income indicates poverty.
  2. Low consumption / inadequate calorie intake — Poor households spend most of their income on food yet cannot get the minimum required calories/nutrition, so low per-capita consumption expenditure is a key indicator.
  3. Unemployment and underemployment — Lack of regular, productive work (open unemployment, disguised and seasonal unemployment) is both a cause and an indicator of poverty.
  4. Poor health and malnutrition — Poverty shows up as malnutrition, poor health, and high infant and maternal mortality due to inability to afford good food and healthcare. …
