Unemployment in India arises from several structural features of the economy working together rather than any single cause. Four significant causes are:

  1. Rapid population growth — India's labour force has grown rapidly year after year, but the pace of new job creation has often failed to keep up, so the economy must generate an ever-larger number of new jobs each year merely to absorb new entrants, without even addressing the existing backlog of unemployed persons.
  2. Slow and uneven growth of industry and agriculture — in several periods, output growth in these sectors has not been fast enough, or labour-intensive enough, to generate employment in proportion to the growth of the labour force.
  3. Capital-intensive nature of modern technology — as industries adopt more mechanised and capital-intensive production methods to remain competitive, a given level of output is produced using fewer workers than older, more labour-intensive techniques required, slowing the pace at which industry can absorb India's growing workforce. …
