Gibberellins primarily promote elongation growth (stem elongation, bolting) and germination, and also influence flowering, fruiting and senescence.

Physiological responses of Gibberellins (GAs):

  1. Stem elongation: GAs increase the length of the axis, promoting elongation of internodes; they cause an increase in overall stem/plant height.
  2. Bolting: in rosette plants (e.g., cabbage), GA application causes rapid internode elongation just before flowering, a phenomenon called bolting.
  3. Breaking dormancy: GAs promote seed and bud dormancy-breaking, stimulating germination — this is why GA3 is commercially used to speed up the malting process in the brewing industry.
  4. Flowering: in many plants requiring a cold/long-day treatment (vernalisation/photoperiodism), GA application can substitute for the requirement and induce flowering.
  5. Delay senescence: GAs can delay leaf/fruit ageing. …
