Gibberellins are best known for causing dramatic stem elongation, but they also affect germination, flowering, fruiting and ageing.

Physiological responses of gibberellins in plants:

  1. Stem elongation: they cause a marked increase in the length of the axis, seen dramatically in genetically dwarf plants and in 'bolting' of rosette plants (e.g. cabbage) before flowering.
  2. Seed germination: they help break dormancy in seeds and buds; in cereal grains, GA stimulates the aleurone layer to synthesize amylase, which hydrolyses stored starch to provide energy for the germinating embryo.
  3. Flowering: GAs can induce flowering in long-day plants even under non-inductive (short-day) conditions, and can also cause bolting. …
