Bolting is the rapid stem elongation seen in rosette-habit plants just before flowering, triggered by gibberellin application or natural GA rise.

Many plants (e.g., cabbage, beet, many biennials) grow as a rosette during their vegetative phase - the stem stays very short and leaves are crowded close to the ground with negligible internodal elongation. Just before the plant switches to reproductive/flowering phase, the internodes suddenly and rapidly elongate, raising the shoot apex and flowers well above the rosette of leaves. This phenomenon of rapid internode elongation immediately preceding flowering is called bolting.
