A buffer solution maintains a nearly constant pH despite small additions of acid, base, or dilution. There are two types: acidic buffers and basic buffers.

A buffer solution is a solution whose pH does not change significantly when small amounts of a strong acid or strong base are added to it, or when it is diluted. This property (called buffer action) arises because the buffer contains both a weak acid/base and its conjugate species, which can neutralise small additions of H+ or OH- without a large pH shift.

Types of buffers:

  1. Acidic buffer - a mixture of a weak acid and its salt with a strong base. Example: CH3COOH (acetic acid) + CH3COONa (sodium acetate). This buffer maintains a pH on the acidic side (pH < 7). …
