A buffer solution resists changes in pH on adding small amounts of acid, base, or on dilution.

A buffer solution is a solution whose pH does not change appreciably when a small quantity of a strong acid or a strong base is added to it, or when it is diluted. Buffers are of two main kinds:

  • Acidic buffer: a mixture of a weak acid and a salt of that acid with a strong base (e.g., CH3COOH/CH3COONa, which buffers around pH < 7).
  • Basic buffer: a mixture of a weak base and a salt of that base with a strong acid (e.g., NH4OH/NH4Cl, which buffers around pH > 7). The buffering action works because the mixture contains a reservoir of both the weak acid (which can neutralise added base) and its conjugate base (which can neutralise added acid), so the [weak acid]/[conjugate base] ratio -- and hence the pH -- barely shifts. …
