A buffer solution maintains a nearly constant pH despite small additions of acid/base; this stable pH is essential to many industrial processes.

A buffer solution resists a change in its pH when a small amount of a strong acid or base is added to it, or when it is diluted. Buffers are made from either a weak acid and its conjugate base (an acidic buffer, e.g. CH3COOH + CH3COONa) or a weak base and its conjugate acid (a basic buffer, e.g. NH4OH + NH4Cl). The weak acid/base component neutralises any added base, while the conjugate salt component neutralises any added acid, keeping [H+] — and therefore pH — nearly constant.
