A buffer solution is a solution that resists a significant change in its pH when a small amount of acid or base is added to it, or when it is diluted. This resistance comes from an equilibrium between a weak acid and its conjugate base (an acidic buffer) or a weak base and its conjugate acid (a basic buffer) present together in appreciable, comparable amounts.
