Curved roads are banked (outer edge raised) so that a component of the normal reaction supplies the centripetal force, reducing dependence on friction; the required banking angle is theta = tan^-1(v^2/(rg)).

Why roads are banked: On a flat curved road, the centripetal force needed for a vehicle to turn is provided entirely by friction between the tyres and the road. This is unreliable, especially at high speed or on a wet road, and causes excessive tyre wear and risk of skidding. By banking the road (raising the outer edge relative to the inner edge by angle theta), a component of the normal reaction N from the road surface itself points towards the centre of the curve and helps provide the centripetal force, reducing dependence on friction.

Derivation of the banking angle (ideal case, friction neglected): Consider a vehicle of mass m moving at speed v on a road of radius r, banked at angle theta. Two forces act: weight mg (vertically down) and normal reaction N (perpendicular to the road surface).
