Banking lets the normal reaction's horizontal component provide the centripetal force; equating N sin(theta) = mv^2/r and N cos(theta) = mg gives tan(theta) = v^2/rg.

Why roads are banked: On a flat curved road, the centripetal force needed to turn the vehicle must come entirely from friction, which is unreliable (it fails on wet or icy roads and at high speed). By raising the outer edge of the road relative to the inner edge (banking), the normal reaction is tilted so that its horizontal component can supply the required centripetal force, so the vehicle can negotiate the curve safely with little or no dependence on friction.

Angle of banking (frictionless case): Consider a vehicle of mass m on a road banked at angle theta, moving with speed v around a curve of radius r. The forces are its weight mg (down) and the normal reaction N (perpendicular to the road).

Vertical balance: Ncos⁡θ=mgN\cos\theta = mg …
