Work done by a constant force F, when it displaces a body through a distance s in the direction of the force, is defined as W = F x s.
If F = 1 newton and s = 1 metre, then W = 1 N x 1 m = 1 N.m, which is defined as 1 joule.
In base SI units, since 1 N = 1 kg.m/s^2, we get:
1 J = 1 kg.m/s^2 x 1 m = 1 kg.m^2/s^2
