Work is the dot product of force and displacement (SI unit: joule), and power is the time rate of doing work (SI unit: watt).

Work: Work done by a constant force F⃗\vec{F} producing a displacement s⃗\vec{s} is defined as the scalar (dot) product:

W=F⃗⋅s⃗=Fscos⁡θW = \vec{F}\cdot\vec{s} = Fs\cos\theta

where θ\theta is the angle between the force and displacement vectors. Work is a scalar quantity. Its SI unit is the joule (J), defined as the work done when a force of 1 newton displaces a body through 1 metre in the direction of the force: 1 J=1 N⋅m1\ J = 1\ N\cdot m.

Power: Power is defined as the time rate at which work is done (or energy is transferred):

P=dWdtP = \dfrac{dW}{dt} …
