Work: Work done by a force F on a body is defined as the product of the magnitude of the force, the magnitude of the displacement s, and the cosine of the angle θ between the force and displacement directions:
W = F.s = F s cos θ
Work is a scalar quantity — it can be positive (force and displacement in roughly the same direction), negative (opposing directions), or zero (force perpendicular to displacement, or no displacement).
Energy: Energy is defined as the capacity or ability of a body to do work. A body possessing energy can perform work on another body (transferring some of that energy to it). Energy exists in many forms — kinetic energy (due to motion, KE = (1/2)mv^2), potential energy (due to position/configuration), thermal energy, etc.
