Fertilization is the fusion of sperm and ovum forming a zygote, which cleaves into a morula and then a blastocyst before implanting in the uterus. The alternative answer covers why reproductive health matters and what MTP is.

Part 1 — Fertilization and events up to the blastocyst:

Fertilization (syngamy) is the fusion of a haploid male gamete (sperm) with a haploid female gamete (ovum) to form a diploid zygote; in humans this normally occurs in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube.

Events from fertilization to blastocyst formation:

  1. Fertilization — sperm fuses with the secondary oocyte, completing its second meiotic division, and the zygote is formed.
  2. Cleavage — the zygote undergoes mitotic (cleavage) divisions as it moves down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, forming 2, 4, 8, 16-celled stages.
  3. Morula — continued cleavage produces a compact ball of 8–16 cells called the morula.
  4. Blastocyst — the morula continues to divide and reorganises into a hollow, fluid-filled ball of cells called the blastocyst. The cells of the blastocyst are arranged into an outer layer, the trophoblast (which later attaches to the endometrium and forms the placenta), and an inner cell mass (which goes on to differentiate into the embryo proper).
  5. Implantation — the trophoblast layer of the blastocyst attaches to the endometrium of the uterus, and the inner cell mass gets differentiated as the embryo — this attachment is called implantation, leading to pregnancy.
