Spermatids are the haploid (1N) end-products of meiosis in the testis — meiosis I halves the chromosome number and meiosis II separates the sister chromatids, so no diploid or purely sex-chromosome-only cell is produced.

In the seminiferous tubules, a diploid (2N) primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis I (reductional division), which halves the chromosome number and produces two haploid (1N) secondary spermatocytes. Each secondary spermatocyte then undergoes meiosis II (equational division, like mitosis) to give two spermatids — so one primary spermatocyte yields four spermatids in all.
