Sperm formation from a primary spermatocyte involves two meiotic divisions (meiosis I and II) to produce four haploid spermatids, followed by spermiogenesis, which converts each round spermatid into a mature, motile spermatozoon.

Step 1 — Meiosis I (reductional division):

Each diploid (2N) primary spermatocyte, located in the seminiferous tubule, undergoes the first meiotic division. This is a reductional division — the homologous chromosomes separate and the chromosome number is halved. It produces two haploid (N) secondary spermatocytes, each still with chromosomes made of two chromatids.

Step 2 — Meiosis II (equational division):

Each secondary spermatocyte quickly undergoes the second meiotic division, in which sister chromatids separate — this is essentially a mitotic-type division. Each secondary spermatocyte thus produces two haploid spermatids.

So, from one primary spermatocyte: 1 → 2 secondary spermatocytes (meiosis I) → 4 spermatids in total (meiosis II).

Step 3 — Spermiogenesis: …
