Human sex determination is chromosomal (XY type): the sperm carrying X or Y decides the sex of the child.

Humans exhibit the XY type of chromosomal sex-determination mechanism. Out of the 23 pairs of chromosomes in a human somatic cell, 22 pairs are autosomes (same in both sexes) and one pair is the sex chromosomes. Females possess a homomorphic pair of sex chromosomes, XX, and are therefore called the homogametic sex — every egg produced by a female carries one X-chromosome. Males possess a heteromorphic pair, XY, and are the heterogametic sex — during spermatogenesis, meiosis produces two types of sperm in equal numbers, 50% carrying an X-chromosome and 50% carrying a Y-chromosome.

At fertilisation, the egg (always X) can fuse with either an X-bearing sperm or a Y-bearing sperm, each with equal probability:

  • Egg (X) + Sperm (X) → zygote XX → develops into a female child. …
