Man follows XY (male-heterogametic) sex determination; birds follow ZW (female-heterogametic) sex determination - in each case, the heterogametic parent's gamete decides the offspring's sex.

Sex determination in man (XY type):

In humans, of the 23 pairs of chromosomes, 22 pairs are autosomes (same in both sexes) and one pair is the sex chromosome pair. Females have two similar sex chromosomes, XX (homogametic sex - producing only X-bearing eggs), while males have two dissimilar sex chromosomes, XY (heterogametic sex). During spermatogenesis, meiosis produces two types of sperm in equal numbers: 50% carrying an X chromosome and 50% carrying a Y chromosome. Since the female always contributes an X-bearing egg, the sex of the child depends entirely on which type of sperm fertilizes the egg: an X-bearing sperm fertilizing the egg produces a daughter (XX), while a Y-bearing sperm fertilizing the egg produces a son (XY). Thus, in man, the male is the heterogametic sex and the sperm determines the sex of the offspring.
