- Male heterogamety: In many species, one sex produces gametes that are all identical with respect to the sex chromosome they carry (the homogametic sex), while the other sex produces two different types of gametes with respect to the sex chromosome (the heterogametic sex). When it is the male that produces two types of gametes (e.g., in humans and Drosophila, sperm bearing either an X or a Y chromosome, while all eggs carry only an X), this is called male heterogamety. The male is XY, and the female (producing only X-bearing eggs) is homogametic (XX).
- Sex determination in man: Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes — 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. A woman's cells carry XX (homogametic — every egg she produces carries a single X chromosome). A man's cells carry XY (heterogametic — he produces two types of sperm in equal numbers, 50% carrying an X chromosome and 50% carrying a Y chromosome). At fertilisation:
- an X-bearing sperm fertilising the egg produces an XX (female) zygote,
- a Y-bearing sperm fertilising the egg produces an XY (male) zygote. Since every egg is the same (X) but the sperm can be either X or Y, it is the father's sperm that determines the sex of the child, with an equal (1:1) probability of a boy or a girl. …
