Their four key properties are: they start on positive and end on negative charges, they never intersect, the tangent gives the field direction, and their relative closeness represents the field strength.
Electric field line: An electric field line is an imaginary smooth curve drawn in an electric field such that the tangent drawn at any point on it gives the direction of the electric field (the net electric force on a positive test charge) at that point. It is a way of pictorially representing an electric field. The field lines are also called lines of force.
Four general properties of electric field lines:
-
Origin and termination: Electric field lines start (originate) from a positive charge and end (terminate) at a negative charge. For a single isolated charge they begin or end at infinity. They are continuous curves without any breaks in a charge-free region.
-
Tangent gives field direction: The tangent drawn at any point on a field line gives the direction of the electric field at that point.
-
No two field lines intersect: Two electric field lines can never cross each other. If they did, at the point of intersection there would be two tangents, i.e. two directions of the electric field at the same point, which is impossible. …
