LH acts via Leydig cells (androgen secretion) and FSH acts via Sertoli cells (spermiogenesis support) to drive spermatogenesis; together they are called gonadotropins.

(a) Functions of LH and FSH in spermatogenesis:

  • LH (Luteinising Hormone): acts on the Leydig cells (interstitial cells) of the testis, stimulating them to synthesise and secrete androgens, mainly testosterone. Testosterone, in turn, stimulates the various processes of spermatogenesis (the formation of sperm from spermatogonia).
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone): acts on the Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules, stimulating them to secrete factors that help in the process of spermiogenesis - the differentiation of spermatids into mature, motile spermatozoa. Sertoli cells also provide nutrition to the developing germ cells. …
