Bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) are called the amphibians of the plant kingdom because they live on land but still depend on external/free water for fertilisation.

An amphibian, in the animal kingdom, is an organism that can live both on land and in water. NCERT extends this analogy to bryophytes:

  • Bryophytes are the first land plants, so the plant body (thalloid or leafy) grows on moist soil, rocks, or bark.
  • However, they lack a well-developed vascular system and their male gametes (antherozoids) are flagellated and motile.
  • These motile male gametes can only swim to the archegonium (which contains the egg) through a thin film of water. So bryophytes absolutely require external/free water for fertilisation to occur, exactly like an amphibian needing water to breed. …
