Choice between describing a transformer, or an AC dynamo (generator).

Option (i): Transformer

  1. Kinds: Step-up transformer (increases AC voltage, fewer turns on primary than secondary, Ns>NpN_s>N_p) and step-down transformer (decreases AC voltage, Ns<NpN_s<N_p).
  2. Labelled diagram (described): Two coils — a primary coil (Np turns) connected to the AC input source, and a secondary coil (Ns turns) connected to the output/load — both wound on a common laminated soft-iron core, which links the magnetic flux from the primary to the secondary.
  3. Principle: Mutual induction — an alternating current in the primary coil produces a continuously changing magnetic flux in the core, which links the secondary coil and induces an alternating EMF in it, with VsVp=NsNp=IpIs\dfrac{V_s}{V_p}=\dfrac{N_s}{N_p}=\dfrac{I_p}{I_s} (ideal transformer).
  4. Applications: (a) Stepping voltage up for efficient long-distance power transmission (high voltage, low current, less I2RI^2R loss) and stepping it back down for household use; (b) Used in voltage stabilisers, power supplies for electronic devices, and welding machines.

Option (ii): Dynamo (AC generator) …
