Losses: copper (I²R), hysteresis, eddy currents, flux leakage, and humming; each is minimised by suitable design.

An ideal transformer would have 100% efficiency, but a real transformer wastes some energy through the following losses:

  1. Copper loss (I²R loss):

The primary and secondary windings have resistance, so current flowing through them dissipates heat (I²R). Minimised by using thick, low-resistance copper wire.

  2. Iron (core) losses — two types:

    1. Hysteresis loss: When the core is magnetised and demagnetised repeatedly by the alternating current, energy is lost in each cycle (area of the hysteresis loop). Minimised by using a soft magnetic material (e.g. silicon steel) with a narrow hysteresis loop.
    2. Eddy-current loss: The changing flux induces circulating (eddy) currents in the core, which heat it. Minimised by using a laminated core (thin insulated sheets).
  3. Flux leakage loss: …
